2009 AFL Debut
Alex is a tall key defensive player who has many honours including being a member of the 2007 NAB AFL All-Australian team after representing Western Australia, who were premiers of the competition. Rance was also one of the top players for rebound 50’s and averaged 17 possessions throughout the 2007 Championship.
Originally playing for the Swan Districts Football Club, Alex continually shows courage and is a hard running player on the field. He is an aggressive competitor with strong defensive skills who is rarely beaten in one-on-one marking situations due to his ability to hold his ground.
Alex is a committed and disciplined trainer who has a mature body for his age. He provides flexibility, in that he plays mainly as a key defender but can also play through the midfield. Alex’s father Murray played over 100 games at VFL/AFL level with the West Coast Eagles and the Western Bulldogs.
Richmond used pick number 18, their priority selection, to secure Alex at the 2008 National Draft and see him as a player who will play a major role as a running defender in the future.
In his first year at the club, the promising defender was as impressive as one could be without making his debut and was awarded the best player at Coburg.
Alex played his first game in 2009 and was immediately lauded by Tiger fans for his toughness at the ball. Following his debut game in round 2 against Geelong, Alex continued to play 15 games during the season.
